Stealing sounds thuggish. But purloin conjures Cary Grant, David Niven. A pearl necklace liberated from a rich, fat lady’s neck, so rich she’ll never miss it, when all the lights suddenly go out at a large party, rich guests all in gowns and jewels, men in tuxedos, an orchestra playing. When the lights come on, you are leaning on the bar in the far corner, enjoying a martini, a million dollar necklace inside a secret compartment in your tuxedo jacket. Her shriek from the middle of the ballroom doesn’t even jitter your nerves. It was expected.
